FIRST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR

(By Chiaki Hall, J2A parent)

On March 8, 2008, we held our first of two annual fundraiser activites. Every year mothers, fathers, and relatives of our students gather to mass produce Kurimanju to support our school. Presently, my son is 18 years old and my daughter is 11. I am an old member of this proud Japanese language school. Every year when parents work to make Kurimanju, I reminisce the years when I had to cook Anko on Friday nights until the wee hours. New parents must know that they are very fortunate not to experience this Anko-making trauma. The school has adopted a more modern life style and purchased ready-made Anko now. The Japanese community in the Los Angeles area has modernized and so has every society in the world. Technological improvements are great, and we like positive evolution. One thing that I would urge all parents is to not let go of good customs along the way. School plays a great part of children’s life. Supporting our children’s school is essential to all parents, and I hope that parents of our school will continue to be motivated to support this school. In this busy world, I too have not enough time to deal with my work, my own education, housekeeping and childcare. I know this is same for everyone. Sometimes, we would like to shortcut our chores and tasks. I am guilty of that charge, but do not shortcut our children on the occasions that really matter. When you look at their faces, you know that they appreciate you spending time at their school. It will stay in their memories when they are grown up that their parents came to support their school -- parents supported their sons’ and daughters’ endeavor to study. Let’s be ready for the next one up: Obon Festival in June!
