May 5th was established as Children’s Day in July 1948. It is associated with “Tango No Sekku”. TANGO means fifth (Go) day of the beginning (Tan) of the month and SEKKU means seasonal festival. This holiday has been an important event to wish for the prosperity of the clan and to pray for the healthy growth of the boy (successor) since Edo period. Tango No Sekku became the boys’ festival, just like Momo No Sekku became the girls’ day celebration. Children’s Day became a national holiday after the war. A carp(- shaped) streamer, Koinobori, is an outdoor decoration used to wish for boys’ success and health on Children’s Day. KOI (carp) is a symbol of success in ancient Chinese legend, Ryumon Densetsu. Also, Kabuto (helmet), Yari (spear), and Naginata (a long-handled sword) were used as outdoor decorations at samurai residences in order to protect from misfortune and evil sprits.
