By Yoshiko Kawada, PTA PresidentWelcome to the 2007-2008 school year at the San Fernando Valley Japanese Language Institute (SFVJLI). One of the best ways to keep in touch with our youth is by getting involved with their school. I take this opportunity to invite you to become a volunteer at SFVJLI. We can make that experience much better for all students through your ideas and support. SFVJLI has been around since 1924. For 83 years, one thing has not changed; our school is run by the parents! Some of you may think it is only the Saturday school, but there are so many things to be done to run the school efficiently. Time is something we just don’t have a lot of and can’t spare with the busy life styles we all have; but we do this, and do so gladly to support our children and to maintain the school’s well being. If you or any adult member of your household can help the school for any amount of time, we would be very grateful. It does not have to be an entire morning. Even half an hour would be appreciated.
I am looking forward to meeting each one of you during this school year. Listed below are some of the many opportunities to get involved.
- Bring recycling items and used books/clothes for yard sales.
- Donate classroom materials for your child.
- Supervise children on the playground during recesses.
- Prepare flyers and banners for cultural and fundraising events.
- Set up the events, occasionally the night before.
- Sell snacks at the snack stand.
- Promote fundraising items to your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors.
